Paolo Ciccarese, MS PhD
Dr. Ciccarese is co-founder and architecture consultant for Medicognos
in matters of knowledge management, workflow technologies and clinical
guideline computerization. He gained his PhD in Biomedical Informatics,
focusing on workflow based guideline management systems, from the
University of Pavia, Italy. He served as a teaching assistant for
courses regarding artificial intelligence in medicine and object
orientation programming for several years at the University of Pavia.
Dr. Ciccarese has over nine years of experience in the design and
development of knowledge based health care records and decision support
systems as well as five years of development experience in open source
projects. He is currently an Instructor at the Harvard Medical School
and Assistant in Neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, where
he is implementing semantic web technologies and knowledge management
techniques to advance neuroscience research.
Karl A. Stroetmann, MBA PhD FRSM
Karl A. Stroetmann is Senior Research Fellow with Empirica
Communication & Technology Research in Bonn, Germany. Empirica has
established itself as a European institute with a broad understanding
of the political, business and socio-economic issues surrounding
eHealth research, implementation and validation. He received his M.B.A.
from the Free University in Berlin, Germany (1968) and was awarded a
Ph.D. in Business Administration and Finance by the University of
British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada (1974). Karl has led studies for
and/or has been a consultant to the EC, OECD, global eHealth industrial
players as well as governments in Bulgaria, Germany, Norway, Romania
and Switzerland. He served as project manager or principal investigator
in European projects on market validation and business development,
economic impact assessment, on eHealth conceptual and policy issues,
and on eHealth RTD studies. The focus of his eHealth strageties
research is on assessing EU Member States in their progress towards
implementing national eHealth strategies and analyzing challenges and
opportunities, as well as identifying barriers for the faster
attainment of the European eHealth vision. In Nov. 2002, together with
his wife, he received an award for: “Telemedicine - Human Applications
of IT in Medicine" (Integrata Foundation). Karl's biography was
included in the International WHO’S WHO of Professionals, and Marquis
Who`s Who in the World. – He regularly publishes in peer-reviewed
journals and presents at international conferences like the European
Union High Level Ministerial eHealth conferences, WoHIT/HiMSS, Royal
Society of Medicine TeleMed & eHealth, and various other national
and international conferences and workshops.
